How The Charleston Wire works

The Charleston Wire is a curated news index for the Charleston area. We collect headlines from publishers' own public RSS feeds. For each story we store only the headline, the link to the original article, the publication date, and a description of at most two sentences taken from the publisher's own feed summary. We never copy, store, or republish full article text.

Every headline on this site links out to the original article at its publisher. Stories are selected and reviewed by an editor before they appear here. Nothing is published automatically.

Images

Thumbnail images shown beside headlines are the publishers' own preview images. They are displayed by reference, loaded directly from the publisher's server using the image address the publisher itself supplies in its feed. We do not download, copy, store, or re-host image files. If a publisher's server declines to serve an image to our readers, a generic Charleston Wire placeholder appears in its place.

Fair use

Our use of headlines, brief factual descriptions, and preview thumbnails is a fair use under Section 107 of the U.S. Copyright Act: the material is used for news reporting and commentary, the amount used is the smallest portion the publisher itself offers for syndication, and our index sends readers to the publisher's own site rather than substituting for it. Headlines and short factual summaries are not creative expression we claim as our own, and all stories are attributed to their source by name.

Copyright takedown requests (DMCA)

If you are a copyright owner, or an agent of one, and you believe material linked or displayed here infringes your copyright, tell us and we will act on it promptly. In most cases a simple note is enough and we will remove the item without any formality. For a formal notice under Section 512 of the Copyright Act, include:

Send notices through the tip line on our front page, marked "DMCA" in the first line, and include a working contact in the contact field so we can reach you. We acknowledge takedown requests within two business days, remove the material while the claim is reviewed, and can disable an entire publisher's feed immediately on request. If you submitted a notice in error, tell us the same way and we will restore the item.

Reader tips

Tips sent through our tip line are submissions from readers. They go only to the editor's review queue, are never published automatically, and are independently verified before any story is written from them. A tipster's name and contact details are kept at the editor's desk and are not published.

Corrections and removals

If something here is wrong, outdated, or should not be listed, contact us through the tip line on the front page and we will look at it the same day we see it.
